An alleged attempt to kill a 22-year-old pregnant woman in connection with her inter-caste marriage has come to light at Kuraiwala village in the Muktsar district.Amanpreet Kaur said the alleged attack was linked to her inter-caste love marriage solemnised three years ago. She had married Satnam Singh, a painter from the same village who belongs to the Dalit community.In her complaint to the police, Amanpreet alleged that her father Baljeet Singh, brother Noorpreet Singh, and other relatives arrived at her house carrying sticks and sharp-edged weapons around 9 pm on Saturday. “They first assaulted my husband, who was saved by my brother-in-law. When my mother-in-law Jaswinder Kaur intervened, she was also assaulted. I was then dragged into a car and taken away. I was assaulted during the journey and repeatedly pressured to give a statement against my husband, but I refused,” she alleged.On Jattvibeday morning, her father and cousins Lovepreet and Sukhpreet took her to the Rajasthan Feeder canal and threw her into the water. “I kept holding on to a bush near the bank, evading their attention. After they left, I contacted the police,” she alleged.The Gidderbaha police have registered a case. The accused are yet to be arrested.
