Reports that the Pakistan Hockey Federation has asked the Asian Hockey Federation to either relocate next month’s Men’s Asian Champions Trophy from India or shift Pakistan’s matches to a neutral venue have dampened the enthusiasm among hockey fans. However, there has been no official confirmation of the request, said Hockey Punjab president Nitin Kohli.“If the reports are correct, it will be very sad if Pakistan does not come,” Kohli said, while maintaining that the championship would go ahead as scheduled.Speaking about the India-Pakistan fixture at a press conference in Mohali two days ago, Kohli had said the match would carry special emotional significance for Punjabis on both sides of the border.“Charda Punjab and Lehnda Punjab will play against each other. For me personally, and for Punjabis across the world, this is a very emotional and special moment. To see India and Pakistan play hockey in Jalandhar, the heartland of hockey, will be a memorable occasion,” Kohli had said.Kulbir Singh, Chief Executive Officer of Hockey Punjab, also expressed disappointment over the possibility of Pakistan missing the tournament.“If Pakistan comes, it will be great. I have received hundreds of requests from people who want to watch this match on November 1. There will be widespread disappointment if the team does not come. It is not good for hockey either,” he said.
