DONALD Trump has announced a new AI task force to be led by a “high IQ” AI tsar after brushing off fears about the technology as a “hoax”.
The US president vowed not to let opponents curb the development of an industry he views as paramount to America’s power.

Trump has previously called opposition to AI development a “sick conspiracy” that would benefit China.
In his latest Truth Social post, Trump likened fears of an AI apocalypse to “many Hoaxes, all generated by the Radical Left Dumocrats”.

He compared them to concerns around Russia, impeachments and climate change, which he blamed for “destroying our country”.
The president added: “AI is the next Industrial Revolution, or Internet, but will be even larger and more impactful, possibly as much as 25% of our Country’s GDP.”

Trump said his new force would be an effort to boost, “cherish” and “watch over” the industry, while looking for wrongdoing.
He said he was screening individuals to lead the task force, adding “only High I.Q. individuals need apply”.
Fears over the technology have ramped up dramatically this summer amid warnings that AI could take over and destroy critical infrastructure.
Jacob Coxon, a whistleblower who resigned from Anthropic – the AI company behind the Claude chatbot – called it “possibly the most dangerous technology humanity has ever created”.
He added: “It’s basically out of science fiction. We know how to control nuclear weapons pretty much, we don’t yet know how to control AI.”
Even more chillingly, he predicted that the supercharged intelligence “could kill us all by the end of the decade.”
His rhetoric prompted urgent calls to impose stricter regulations on AI.
In May, Google‘s Gemini was able to autonomously hack into three companies.
Two months later, Claude escaped its test environment to hack organisations on its own.
King Charles is among world leaders to express concern about the pace of the technology, warning tech bosses of the “existential dangers” it poses.
Trump has previously dismissed calls for more safeguards, declaring: The only control that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades.”
He has not said whether the new task force will be military or civilian, although he likened it to the recently formed space force, the newest branch of the US military.
AI is expected to be a key talking point when Trump meets with Chinese president Xi Jingping next week.
The US-China rivalry has been at the heart of the technology’s speedy development, with the two superpowers trying to gain an edge over the other.
Like Trump, Beijing has criticised calls for a slowdown as “fearmongering” and a desire to stunt China’s growth.
