A 30-year-old pregnant assistant section officer in the Defence Ministry has been found dead at her home in Dwarka. Her family has alleged she had been subjected to mental and physical harassment by her husband and in-laws.Nazia Khanam, who was three months pregnant, had married Azam Ali Khan on April 11, around four months before her death. According to her family, she repeatedly complained about alleged abuse by her husband and his parents, Samimun Nisha and Babar Ali Khan. The incident came to light when a PCR call regarding an alleged suicide was received at the Sector 23 police station in Dwarka at 4.21 am on August 21.The police said a team led by SI Satpal Dagar reached the spot, took the body into possession and shifted it to the DDU Hospital mortuary.According to the police, Nazia’s family initially did not raise any allegation against her matrimonial family. “On August 21, the family members appeared before the executive magistrate and submitted their written statements. They did not express any suspicion or level any allegation against any member of the matrimonial family,” a police officer said. However, the family returned before the SDM on August 22 and submitted a fresh complaint alleging harassment by Nazia’s husband and in-laws.Based on the subsequent complaint, the police registered an FIR under BNS Sections 85 and 108.The family has alleged that Nazia had complained to them about mental and physical harassment by her husband and in-laws. They have also questioned the circumstances of her death and demanded that the post-mortem examination be videographed and all evidence be preserved.According to the family’s account, Nazia had allegedly told them that she was being abused, beaten and threatened with eviction and even death. Her father, Tawab Khan, has held her husband responsible and sought legal action. The circumstances surrounding her death are now under investigation. Police are examining the statements of the family, post-mortem findings and evidence collected from the scene. The police said all necessary legal and procedural steps were taken after the PCR call was received and that the investigation was continuing.
