Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Monday urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to take up the issue of racial attacks on Sikhs with the authorities concerned in the US and the UK.In a letter to Jaishankar, Warring said there was a sense of fear and insecurity among Sikh drivers in the two countries and caused “deep hurt and anguish” among Sikhs globally.Referring to the US Department of Homeland Security advertisement stating, “Get off our roads; you don’t know how to drive, Mr Singh,” Warring described it as “racially prejudicial” and said it had triggered concerns over racial profiling of Sikhs and turbaned drivers in the US.He pointed out that several US political leaders, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Indian-origin Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, had objected to the advertisement.Though the advertisement was withdrawn, Warring said there had been no public objection from the Centre. He said a Sikh driver in Wyoming was “mercilessly beaten and stabbed 17 times” and was struggling for his life in hospital. He also cited an incident in England, in which a Sikh bus driver was assaulted.Condemns Centre’s proposal over farm firesWarring condemned the Centre’s proposal to penalise farmers for stubble burning.The Centre has proposed to make “red entries” in revenue records of the farmers found to be burning crop residue. He said this was an “authoritarian decree” to intimidate the farmers. He said anybody could set stubble on fire in anybody’s fields, but the onus would be on the owner.
