The investigation into the alleged harassment of a Class X girl in Bihar’s Jamui district gathered pace on Tuesday with the arrest of two accused during a police operation in which one sustained a bullet injury to the leg while another was injured while allegedly attempting to flee.With Tuesday’s developments, arrests in the September 19 incident have gone up to five. Munger Range DIG Rakesh Kumar said Nandan Yadav sustained a bullet wound to his leg and his accomplice Hareram Yadav fractured a knee while trying to escape during a police raid near the Kundar barrage.The accused, who were seen harassing the Class X girl in now-viral videos, were taken to Jamui Sadar Hospital.In the case, which has triggered a major face-off between the Opposition and the ruling NDA in Bihar, the police have been conducting raids since Monday after the video of the alleged assault on a minor girl and a boy surfaced on social media, triggering widespread outrage.Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor demanded accountability in the matter, slamming the ruling NDA government for “shaming Bihar”.With the investigation underway, the DIG said the police had earlier picked up three minors, who have been produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.He said investigators could make more arrests after questioning Nandan and Hareram.The video doesn’t exactly reveal how many perpetrators were involved. The police claim the main accused have been caught.Kumar identified Hareram as the person allegedly seen in the video with his face covered by a scarf and apparently leading the group.The victims, reportedly students at the same coaching centre, were allegedly stopped on a road by a group of goons that harassed them. Video clips showed the girl being groped.The victims had not initially approached the police. The case came to light when clips, recorded by one of the alleged perpetrators, went viral. The police took suo motu cognisance, tracing the victims and forming a special investigation team to crack the case.ADG (Law and Order) K Suhita Anupam said the incident was alarming, but equally concerning was the circulation of the video, which revealed the girl’s identity.The police have promised expeditious chargesheets and a fast-track trial and said those involved in circulating the footage would also face action under the IT Act.Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday said crimes against women were rising in Bihar, asking what was the point of government schemes if women were not safe on the streets.Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had earlier called the incident “deeply disturbing” and demanded action against all accused under the POCSO Act.Tejashwi Yadav said Bihar had been “shamed” by the incident and demanded Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary’s resignation, saying it reflected a “collapse of law and order”.He also criticised minister Shravan Kumar and JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha for describing the incident as “stray”, calling the remarks insensitive.Slamming the NDA government, Prashant Kishor questioned whether the police would have acted had the video not gone viral, even as authorities warned against sharing the footage.NDA allies, however, defended the government’s response. Union ministers Rajiv Ranjan Singh ‘Lalan’ Singh of the JD (U) and Hindustan Awam Morcha chief Jitan Ram Manjhi flagged “jungle raj” during RJD’s rule and hit back at the Opposition.
