In a joint operation, the district administration, the Health Department and the police raided an unauthorised drug rehabilitation centre along the Peerkhana road in Raman Mandi on Monday evening and rescued 24 addicts. They were then admitted to a government facility in Bathinda.The action was carried out on the directions of the Deputy Commissioner following a complaint regarding the functioning of the centre. A joint team comprising a naib tehsildar, a senior medical officer (SMO), a drug inspector and the SHO of the Raman police station conducted the raid and sealed the centre.Sub-Inspector Nirmaljit Singh, SHO of the Raman police station, said, “No doctor was present at the centre and 24 addicts were rescued. Most of them were in the age group of 20-30, while one was 40-year-old. They belonged to different villages. Some of them were from Haryana as well.”The SHO added, “We are awaiting the report of the health authorities to take legal action. The owner of the centre, however, was not present when our team visited.”Sources said a hoarding was also displayed outside the centre and it was being operated openly from a residence.Some unauthorised drug rehabilitation centres have been busted in nearby districts in the past as well.
