A MAJOR UK motorway has ground to a halt following a horror smash involving a car.
The A1M is currently shut in both directions between J62, Durham, and J63, Chester-le-Street.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene shortly before 11pm last night.
Durham Constabulary is now carrying out a formal crash investigation with the road set to remain closed until it is concluded.
Drivers have been warned to expect delays with the major road set to be closed into the morning.
Diversion routes have been put in place with motorists instructed to plan ahead before travelling.

National Highways said: “A1M in both directions between J62 (Durham) and J63 (Chester-le-Street) remains closed due to a serious collision.
“Investigations are taking place at the scene. There are no delays on the approach in either direction.”
