A Delhi court on Monday convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and four others in the 2020 murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the Delhi riots.Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh of the Karkardooma courts held Hussain guilty of multiple offences, including murder, under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, it dropped the charge of criminal conspiracy against him.The others who have been convicted are Nazim, Qasim, Javed and Anas. The court, however, acquitted Haseen, Firoz, Gulfam, Soyab, Sameer Khan and Muntajim in the case. The sentencing order is expected after a hearing on the quantum of punishment. The case stems from an FIR registered on February 26, 2020, based on a complaint by Ankit’s father, Ravinder Kumar, who named Hussain as an accused, alleging that rioters operating from his building had executed the attack.According to the FIR, the IB officer had returned home from office on February 25, 2020, before stepping out. When he did not return for a long time, his family began searching for him. Later, locals informed them that Ankit had been killed and his body thrown into the Khajuri Khas drain near a mosque in the Chand Bagh Pulia area. His body was subsequently recovered from the drain, the FIR said.Delhi Commissioner of Police Satish Golchha, who served as Special Commissioner of Police during the riots and led the investigation, said, “During the riots, our primary responsibility was to maintain law and order and ensure a fair, impartial and evidence-based investigation. Every effort was made to collect credible evidence and bring those responsible before the law. With the court delivering its judgment, I feel satisfied that the hard work and professionalism of the investigating team have stood the test of judicial scrutiny. We remain committed to bringing all those responsible for crimes committed during the 2020 riots to justice through the due process of law.”According to the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police Crime Branch, Ankit was “specifically targeted” by a mob led by Hussain.“A witness standing on a terrace had captured a video on his mobile phone, in which a group of persons were seen dumping the body in the drain. During the post-mortem, the doctors found 51 sharp and blunt-force injuries on Ankit’s body,” the chargesheet said. The chargesheet was filed under multiple sections of the IPC, including those related to murder, kidnapping, rioting, promoting enmity between groups on religious and racial grounds, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.
