The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday accused Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal of misleading people, pointing out that his party appears to have quietly dropped the “Dharam Yudh Morcha” it had announced to launch on July 19.Addressing a press conference, AAP’s Punjab media in-charge Baltej Pannu said Badal had announced almost a month ago that Akali Dal would launch the agitation after offering prayers at Akal Takht on July 19.However, with only two days left, the party had neither announced any programme nor made preparations for the proposed protest, he said.He further alleged that the announcement was aimed at creating unnecessary political confrontation with the Bhagwant Mann government rather than launching a serious public movement. The proposed agitation was not even discussed during the Akali Dal’s recent core committee meeting, he claimed, alleging that the party expected people to forget the announcement.Targeting earlier Akali Dal governments, the AAP leader alleged that the party had a history of misleading Punjabis, and also allowing the spread of drug menace in the state during its 2007-17 tenure.Referring to the 2015 sacrilege incidents, Pannu said all the major developments in these cases took place during the tenure of the SAD-BJP government: these include the theft of Guru Granth Sahib’s saroop, subsequent sacrilege incidents, police firing at Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura, and destruction of evidence. He further alleged that after the chargesheet was filed in 2020, several Akali leaders, including former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, obtained bail in the case.Citing observations of a Faridkot court, Pannu alleged that the court had questioned Sukhbir Singh Badal’s conduct during the 2015 sacrilege incidents. He also accused the previous Akali governments of registering cases against the family of slain human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra instead of ensuring justice.Pannu questioned why the Akali Dal had not announced its programme, strategy or leadership for the proposed “Dharam Yudh Morcha” if it intended to launch the agitation on July 19.He also accused the Badal family of focusing on personal wealth instead of public welfare during its years in power.
