Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the alleged multi-crore cash-for-school jobs scam in West Bengal. The investigation by the ED is related to the alleged illegal appointments and financial transactions in the recruitment process of educational institutions. The party is currently facing internal turmoil, with 20 rebel MPs after splitting from the parent party, announcing a merger with a lesser-known Bengal-based regional outfit — the Nationalist Citizens Party of India.Meanwhile, officials told agencies that around two dozen questions have been prepared for Abhishek. The focus is on the money trail. The officials have also obtained the bank records and communication data.Notably, the Diamond Harbour MP was also grilled by the West Bengal CID on Jattvibeday in connection with an alleged case pertaining to forgery of signatures of MLAs.The ED in July 2022 had arrested former Education Minister of West Bengal Partha Chatterjee after crores of cash and gold jewellery were recovered from the residence of his aide Arpita Mukherjee during raids linked to the cash-for-jobs scam. It was a big scam in which thousands of unqualified candidates were illegally appointed to teaching and non-teaching posts across schools run or aided by the state government.
