Rajya Sabha members Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, who crossed over to the BJP from AAP, are likely to set up their base in Chandigarh, in the hope that they can put pressure on the AAP government, political sources here said. The defection of seven Rajya Sabha members, including Pathak and Chadha, to the BJP has threatened a breach in the AAP fortress, which has 94 MLAs in the 117-member Assembly.“We are not sure about their immediate movement to Punjab but one thing is clear that their experience will be used for building the BJP base in the Assembly elections,” a BJP leader told The Tribune. There are reports that a close aide of Chadha has already started calling AAP leaders in Punjab with a “preposition”. Pathak, who built the AAP organisation from scratch, personally knows and has mentored AAP organisation leaders and MLAs.Thus, the AAP leadership is making all efforts to keep its flock together. The earlier plans to replace a sizeable number of sitting AAP MLAs with the parallel halqa in-charges installed in many constituencies seem to have been shelved for a majority of seats.“The party has realised that even if the MLAs were underperformers, at least they are still AAP faces in their constituencies. Thus, an exercise has been initiated where all MLAs in a district are being summoned on a single day. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Punjab affairs incharge Manish Sisodia are briefing them about their performance and how they can up their graph,” said a senior AAP leader.Amid the recent controversy surrounding Mann’s conduct in the Vidhan Sabha, AAP has also launched a mega social media blitzkrieg to highlight its development works.“The reason why non-BJP parties lost elections in other states today was because they did not have much to show for development. We have fulfilled all promises and we rely on our delivery of promises to help us seek public mandate in 2027,”said another senior AAP leader. At the same time, AAP’s attack on the BJP, though on for quite some time now, has become only shriller and sharper. After the Assembly poll results, Mann said that BJP’s hands were “drenched in the blood of 700 farmers” and the party should forget forming the government in Punjab.
