Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday held the Narendra Modi-led BJP government responsible for repeated examination paper leaks and recruitment scams, alleging that students across the country were being “destroyed by a corrupt system” that had failed to ensure accountability despite hundreds of exam fraud cases over the last decade.Reacting to the death of 21-year-old NEET aspirant Ritik Mishra from Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri and another student in Goa, Congress MP Gandhi said the country’s youth were not losing to examinations but were being crushed by systemic corruption and repeated exam scandals.“These children didn’t lose to the exams — they were killed by a corrupt system. This isn’t suicide — it’s murder by the system,” Rahul said.Referring to Ritik Mishra, who was appearing for NEET for the third time, Rahul said the student broke down after the examination was cancelled.“‘No more competitive exams now’ were his last words,” Rahul said. The Congress leader cited figures to attack the Centre over alleged failures in handling examination frauds, claiming that between 2015 and 2026, the country witnessed 148 exam scams, leading to cancellation of 87 examinations and affecting nearly nine crore students.According to Rahul, only one case out of the 148 scams resulted in punishment. He claimed that while the CBI investigated 17 cases and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) took up 11, “no one was punished”.Targeting the government over medical entrance examinations, Rahul alleged that there had been at least 15 scams linked to NEET, AIPMT and other medical entrance tests.“And the most shameful part — not a single officer or minister responsible resigned. They’re removed and then quietly reinstated to higher positions. Those who orchestrate the theft get rewarded, while the children taking the exams lose their lives,” he said.Questioning the prime minister, Rahul asked, “Modi ji — how many Ritiks will it take to awaken your accountability?”Addressing students, Gandhi said the Opposition would continue fighting against exam corruption and paper leak scandals.“My young friends, your pain is my pain. Your hard work is my hard work. Those who steal your future will have to answer. No matter how long it takes, no one will be spared — this is my promise,” he said.“We will fight this battle together — and we will win,” Gandhi added.Congress general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh also targeted the government over examination issues and rising prices.“Blows on students from NEET, strikes on the common people from petrol-diesel prices, assaults on women’s kitchens from milk — the PM has only sermons ready,” Ramesh said.
