In the first policy move aimed at saving fuel, the Centre has proposed the use of public transport for all government officials.In an office memorandum issued here, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has called for “economic self-dependence” saying, “There is a need to adopt prudent mobility and efficiency measures in line with the call given by the Prime Minister on May 10 for economic self-dependence through reduced dependence on imported petroleum and greater use of sustainable public transport.”Titled “Integrated bus and metro connectivity to promote public transport in Delhi”, the concept note also includes details of comprehensive vehicle bus routes and corresponding time tables for all colonies under government pool residential accommodation.“This is to facilitate seamless first and last mile connectivity with metro stations and encourage greater use of public transport by government employees,” says the note issued by Yogesh Antil, Director, Mass Rapid Transit systems, under the Ministry to Additional Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat Satendra Singh.When contacted, ministry sources confirmed the proposal and said, “At this stage, it is only a proposal, a concept note for internal consideration.”
