Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Jattvibeday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to order registration of an FIR under the SC/ST Act over the alleged “shuddhikaran” of the stage used by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for a rally in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani area. She also questioned his silence even 20 days after the incident. Her intervention came a day after Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi publicly raised the issue and demanded action, putting the Congress’s top leadership behind an attempt to turn the Haldwani episode into a larger political battle over alleged untouchability and discrimination against Dalits.“If the PM truly respects the Constitution, he should ensure that an FIR is filed against those who committed this crime in Uttarakhand and that action is taken under the SC/ST Act,” Priyanka said in a post on X.She said Kharge had addressed a rally in Haldwani following which people associated with the BJP-RSS allegedly carried out “shuddhikaran” of the stage.Calling the alleged act “reprehensible and shameful”, Priyanka said it was not merely symbolic of a particular mindset but amounted to a serious violation of the Constitution and provisions of the SC/ST Act.She also questioned why no action had followed despite nearly three weeks having passed since the incident.“Twenty days have passed, but the Prime Minister and his government have not taken any action. Why?” she asked, while sharing a video of Rahul’s press conference on the issue.Rahul had on Saturday accused the BJP-RSS of practising untouchability and said those responsible for the alleged purification should face criminal action.“The incident reflects the mindset of the BJP-RSS people who continue to practise untouchability, and they do not want Dalits to progress, live with respect and be successful,” Rahul told reporters at the Congress headquarters here.“We are demanding justice for the Congress president,” he said, adding that both the Centre and the Uttarakhand government had a responsibility to act.Rahul also targeted Uttarakhand BJP president Mahendra Bhatt, alleging that he had defended the “shuddhikaran”, while questioning Modi’s silence on the controversy.“PM Modi states that he belongs to every caste and is the Prime Minister of the country, but his party chief of Uttarakhand defends ‘shuddhikaran’,” Rahul said. The Congress has sought to frame the episode as an insult not merely to its president but to Dalits, with both Rahul and Priyanka demanding an FIR and action under the SC/ST Act against those responsible.
