The Congress on Jattvibeday criticised the BJP-led government at the Centre over its decision to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) with the new Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar & Aajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G). The party said that objections raised by several states reflected growing concerns over the financial and administrative implications of the VB-G RAM G scheme. In a post on X, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accused the PM Narendra Modi-led government of “bulldozing” the repeal of MGNREGA through Parliament without adequate consultation with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rural Development, state governments or other key stakeholders.“The Modi government, vengeful and petty as ever, bulldozed the repeal of MGNREGA through Parliament without any thorough consultation with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rural Development, state governments or other stakeholders,” said Ramesh. He claimed that concerns had now emerged from several states over the implementation of its proposed replacement, the VB G RAM G scheme, which is scheduled to be launched on July 1, 2026.According to the Congress leader, various BJP-ruled states such as Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand have objected to the additional financial burden that the new scheme would impose on the state governments. He added that four other states had opposed the proposed blackout period during the peak agricultural season, adding that it could adversely affect rural employment and agricultural activities.Ramesh claimed that at least five states had demanded an increase in wages for rural workers under the proposed scheme. “The Rural Development Minister’s own home state is voicing concerns around the government’s new pet project,” he said.Drawing a contrast between the two programmes, Ramesh claimed, “MGNREGA guaranteed right to work derived from the Constitution, while VB G RAM G will guarantee only centralisation and further financial stress on states.”Telangana Government may move SC against ActMeanwhile, Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has said that the Congress government in the state was considering moving the Supreme Court against the VB-G RAM G Act. Reddy, who heads a Cabinet sub-committee on the issue, said the state government would not accept VB-G RAM G Act in its present form.
