India’s flagship carrier Air India on Wednesday announced the temporary suspension of seven international routes and reduction in frequencies on several overseas services between June and August 2026 amid continued airspace restrictions and record high jet fuel prices, triggering a major network rationalisation across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. The airline said the move was aimed at improving operational stability and avoiding last-minute disruption for passengers as global aviation costs continue to rise.Among the major suspensions, Air India will temporarily halt flights on the Delhi-Chicago, Delhi-Newark, Mumbai-New York (JFK), Delhi-Shanghai, Chennai-Singapore, Mumbai-Dhaka and Delhi-Malé routes through August. The airline has also reduced frequencies on several key routes across North America, Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia. Flights between Delhi and San Francisco will be reduced from 10 services a week to seven, while Delhi-Toronto operations will drop from 10 weekly flights to five till July before returning to daily operations in August. Delhi-Vancouver flights have also been reduced from seven to five per week.At the same time, Air India said its Mumbai-Newark service will increase from three weekly flights to seven per week, even as Delhi-Newark and Mumbai-New York (JFK) services remain suspended. In Europe, flights from Delhi to Paris have been cut from 14 weekly services to seven, while routes to Copenhagen, Milan, Vienna, Zurich and Rome will also see reduced operations.Australia-bound passengers will also face fewer options, with Delhi-Melbourne and Delhi-Sydney flights reduced from daily services to four times a week.Several Asian and SAARC destinations have also been hit by the rationalisation exercise. Delhi-Singapore flights will drop from 24 weekly services to 14, while Mumbai-Singapore services will be halved from 14 to seven. Flights to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Kathmandu, Dhaka and Colombo have also been reduced. The airline said despite the temporary cuts, it will continue operating over 1,200 international flights every month across five continents. This includes 33 weekly flights to North America, 47 to Europe, 57 to the United Kingdom, eight to Australia, 158 to the Far East, Southeast Asia and SAARC region, and seven weekly services to Mauritius.Air India said passengers affected by cancellations will be offered alternative flights where possible, free date changes or full refunds. The airline added that its customer support teams and digital channels remain available round the clock for assistance. The Tata Group-owned carrier also indicated that further adjustments may be made if the “extraordinary operating environment” continues in the coming months.
