The Amritsar Commissionerate Police arrested three persons, including one injured in an exchange of fire, following a shooting incident in the Verka area.The incident came to light on May 5 when a team from the Verka police station, while patrolling near a railway crossing, received information about a violent clash between two groups near the Verka bus stand during which shots were fired.Police said complainants told them they were out for a walk when a black vehicle and a white vehicle stopped nearby. Around eight to nine persons got out — two allegedly armed with pistols and two with sharp-edged weapons. One of the accused, identified as Nav, allegedly fired a shot in the air and then two rounds at the complainant, allegedly with intent to kill. The complainant escaped unhurt and raised an alarm, after which the accused fled.In follow-up action, a police team led by Inspector Baljinder Singh raided the residence of the accused. During the raid, five to six suspects approached on foot and allegedly opened fire at the police team.The police responded and chased the accused towards the bus stand. During the chase, accused Krishna Sonar allegedly fired at the police. In self-defence, the police first fired warning shots in the air, but as the accused continued firing, they retaliated. Krishna Sonar sustained bullet injuries in both legs and was apprehended on the spot. His associate, Ranjit Singh alias Bobby, allegedly picked up a weapon and fled while firing.The injured accused was shifted to Civil Hospital, Amritsar, where he is undergoing treatment under police custody.Police later arrested Ranjit Singh alias Bobby and Gautam Mehra. Based on Ranjit Singh’s disclosure, a .32 bore pistol used in the crime was seized.An FIR has been registered at the Verka police station under relevant sections of the BNS and Arms Act.Police officials said further investigation is underway to identify and arrest others involved. The operation was carried out under the supervision of DCP (Detective) Ravinderpal Singh, ADCP Harpal Singh, ACP (East) Kawaljit Singh, and SHO Baljinder Singh.
