Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta, who heads the club’s recruitment department, is behind the hire after working with Alonso at Atletico Madrid.
The Spaniard was appointed as Atletico’s head of scouting in 2016 and stayed there until moving to Granada just over two years ago.
Alonso was Granada’s sporting director, but he first started out over a decade ago working as a youth coach at Spanish side Sporting Gijon.
He is the latest new face to join Arsenal’s recruitment setup after Maurizio Michele became part of the team last year.

The former Napoli head of scouting, like Alonso, was another pick of Berta’s and has a glowing reputation.
Michele is famed for unearthing Slovakia star Marek Hamsik, but he is also credited with spotting Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Arsenal are yet to make any major moves in this transfer window and the only deals done so far were always expected to go through.
Piero Hincapie’s loan move from Bayer Leverkusen has been made permanent for a fee of £34.5million.

Jakub Kiwior has left the club to join Porto after they activated a clause that was part of his loan move last summer.
The defender is joining the Portuguese champions for a fee of around £14.5m, plus a further £4m in add-ons.
