An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was killed after being hit by a speeding car at a police checkpoint set up near Sardulgarh on the Barnala-Sirsa highway to intercept suspected drug smugglers in Mansa district on Wednesday.The deceased has been identified as ASI Sukhmander Singh. Sources said the police received information that the occupants of the car had hit an elderly person near Jhunir and fled. Acting on the tip-off, a checkpoint was set up to apprehend the suspects.The car rammed into ASI Sukhmander Singh, who was deployed at the checkpoint, killing him on the spot. The accused then tried to flee but lost control of the vehicle and hit the road divider.Police teams chased and apprehended both occupants shortly after the incident. They were identified as Jasveer Singh and Tejinder Singh of Maujian village.Sardulgarh SHO Pushpinder Kaur said, “A speeding car hit our ASI and claimed his life. I am at the scene and investigating the matter.”
