AN award-winning Indian restaurant has closed its doors for good after serving a local community for 35 years.

The owner of Bayleaf restaurant in Barnet said the “dining preferences” in the north London neighbourhood had changed in recent years.

The business, located in High Road, Whetstone, had won several awards, including best north London restaurant at the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway awards.

It was also awarded the prestigious Harden’s Certificate of Achievement for “very high quality” food in 2024.

Announcing the news, founder Tofozzul Miah wrote on Facebook: “Dear customers and friends, after 35 memorable years on the High Road, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Bayleaf Restaurant.

“We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support you have shown us throughout the decades.

“It has been our privilege to serve three generations of patrons, creating lasting memories and culinary experiences.

“As the demographics of Whetstone have evolved, so too have the dining preferences in our community.

“While many establishments may have shifted away from serving real food, we have remained committed to quality and tradition.”

Despite the restaurant’s closure, Bayleaf will continue to serve food for takeaway in the local area.

Miah added: “Every moment spent serving the local community has been a joy, and we will cherish the connections we have built with each of you.

“While we recognise the challenges that micro businesses may face in the future, we remain hopeful for the resilience of our community. Thank you for being part of our journey.”

Fans of the restaurant have been left devasted by the closure, with one writing: “So sad to see the Bayleaf close after all these years especially when they got the Hardens 2026 award.

“Such a shame as the food and the staff were amazing had some wonderful meals and takeaways over the years.”

Another wrote: “Such a shame, had some lovely meals in there over the years.”
