The Punjab Government has written to the Centre, seeking a ban on the release of web series “Lawrence of Punjab”.In a letter to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Joint Director C Senthil Rajan, Special DGP (Cyber Crime) V Neeraja said the series glorified organised crime and criminal elements.Neeraja said they had learnt that the series depicted the life and criminal trajectory of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.The state has requested the blocking of public access to the “unlawful” content under Section 69A (1) of the Information Technology Act.“The series contains references to serious criminal incidents, including murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala and other firing incidents linked to prominent personalities. The content contains dramatised portrayals, real-life footage and narrative elements which lead to the glorification of organised crime and criminal elements,” the Special DGP said. She said the web series had attracted strong objections from various sections of society.“There is apprehension that the documentary has the potential to attract widespread public attention… negatively influence youth by normalising or romanticising organised crime, undermining law enforcement efforts against gangsterism and disrupt public orde….” the letter read. Earlier, slain singer Sidhu Moosewala’s father Balkaur Singh had also sought a ban on the series, saying it glorified crime.Warring writes to ModiPunjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring wrote to PM Narendra Modi, seeking his immediate intervention to stop the release of the web series.Warring expressed strong objection to the series, saying that it glorified an accused in multiple heinous offences, including the killing of noted Moosewala. “We in Punjab have strong objections to this series for many reasons,” Warring said, adding that state’s identity was rooted in its rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
