The 10-day campaign led by Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel and state president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, which was intended to showcase organisational strength, ended amid factional tensions, slogan-shouting and clashes among workers.Ludhiana district became the epicenter of discord and open defiance against party leadership. The visit ended on Saturday with a programme at Khanna.In Ludhiana, supporters of Bharat Bhushan Ashu raised slogans, prompting Warring to accuse them of being backed by the RSS. The confrontation deepened existing divides, with workers openly displaying posters carrying the slogan “Go Back Bhupesh Baghel” and wearing T-shirts bearing the same message.The unrest was not confined to Ludhiana. In Malerkotla, rival factions reportedly clashed on stage. The dispute escalated to physical scuffles and police had to intervene to separate the groups by using batons.In Khanna, a section of Congress workers raised slogans in support of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Attempts were made to stop the slogan-shouting, after which the group reportedly walked out of the meeting.The incidents highlighted how factionalism has seeped into smaller districts, undermining the party’s grassroots credibility.Political experts caution that the visible infighting from Ludhiana to Malerkotla and Khanna, has weakened the Congress’s organisational framework.A senior Congress leader said, “Instead of strengthening booths, Baghel’s campaign has left them fractured, and it can pose a serious threat ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.”“Repeated clashes during party meetings have sent a negative message to voters. It gives the impression that Congress leaders are more focused on internal power struggles than public issues,” added the leader.Senior Congress leader Surinder Dawar, commenting on the Ludhiana incident, said disrupting a party programme was “not in good taste”.“If there are some personal differences between leaders, they should sit together with the high command and resolve them rather than creating a scene like this,” he said.
