A day after tension prevailed at a gurdwara in Birewala Jattan village over the alleged sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib, police have registered a case against unidentified persons. Some objectionable words were reportedly found written on a page of Guru Granth Sahib, and an attempt was allegedly made to erase them with correction fluid. The incident triggered outrage among members of the Sikh community.Talking to The Tribune on Thursday, Balbir Singh, SHO of the Jaurkian police station, said, “This is an old matter and was already under investigation by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which has been conducting a probe. The SGPC team visited yesterday as well. Since the incident occurred before the enactment of the new Punjab sacrilege law, the case has been registered under Section 295-A of the IPC on the complaint of Nihang Boota Singh.”The SHO added, “Meanwhile, a new Gurdwara Management Committee has been formed. The situation is peaceful now.”Similarly, Ricky Singh, sarpanch of Birewala Jattan village, said, “The incident is old, but the granthi who joined the gurdwara about two months ago came to know about the sacrilegious act on Tuesday. He informed some Nihangs in the village, who gathered at the gurdwara on Wednesday, leading to tension. It has been decided to form a new five-member Gurdwara Management Committee within a week, and the issue has now been resolved. SGPC is continuing its probe and recorded the statement of a former granthi yesterday.”
