The BJP on Monday took a swipe at the opposition INDIA bloc following its meeting here, with the party questioning the alliance’s unity and political prospects. At the centre of the BJP’s criticism was Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, whom the party blamed for the opposition alliance’s political setbacks.Addressing a press conference, BJP leader Sambit Patra mocked the presence of opposition leaders, including Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav, and suggested that their association with Rahul Gandhi would ultimately weaken their political standing.In a sarcastic remark, Patra said, “Akhilesh Yadav, after seeing Mamata Banerjee, might have been thinking that he, too, would face a similar political fate in the coming months.”He alleged that leaders aligned with Rahul Gandhi have “historically suffered political setbacks”.Continuing his criticism, the BJP leader said that both “Banerjee and Yadav appeared uncomfortable at the meeting” and were likely concerned about the future of the opposition alliance. He said that the effectiveness and strength of the INDIA bloc would become evident in the next few meetings.Patra also ridiculed the alliance decision to hold regular consultations, saying, “If its influence continued to decline, future meetings might become so small that they could be held inside a car rather than at larger venues such as the Constitution Club, where the latest gathering took place.”The INDIA bloc held its meeting here, which was attended by 25 parties. Leaders of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren joined the meeting online. While, the meeting was under way, the Trinamool Congress suffered another jolt as 20 Lok Sabha members quit the party and decided to write to Speaker Om Birla to formally join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance parliamentary party.
