A physical altercation broke out between two groups of private ambulance operators at the Moga Civil Hospital. The dispute centered on a disagreement over who would secure the contract to transport a deceased person’s body to Nepal.The conflict began when a family from Nepal sought an ambulance to transport their relative’s body back to their home country. Multiple ambulance drivers vied for the long-distance job, leading to a verbal spat that quickly escalated into violence.Witnesses said that the operators exchanged blows and argued in the hospital premises, causing panic among patients and visitors.The situation was eventually brought under control by members of the public and hospital staff who stepped in to mediate and separate the clashing parties.This incident highlights the recurring “commission culture” and aggressive competition among private ambulance services at government hospitals, often referred to as the “Ambulance Mafia”, alleged some doctors in the hospital.The incident has raised serious questions regarding the security arrangements at the Moga Civil Hospital. While the brawl was eventually settled by bystanders, the lack of immediate intervention by authorities was a matter of concern, said the doctors.
