It would mark the return of a sporting spectacle last seen in London in 2012.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also touted a bid for the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup in the next decade.

Under plans to make the UK “event ready” the government is planning to criminalise reselling tickets for the biggest sporting spectacles such as Euro 2028.

It is hoped banning all resale tickets will shield fans from being fleeced by greedy touts.

Ms Nandy said: “Sport brings our country together like nothing else – and never more so than when we welcome the world’s biggest major events.

“This Government is committed and ambitious.

“We want to continue attracting the most prestigious events in sport so that people all over the country can enjoy the whole range of economic and social benefits they bring for generations to come, showing the best of Britain to the world.”

The 2028 Olympics will take place in Los Angeles, California in the United States.

This will be the third time the Olympic Games take place in LA.

The City of Angels also hosted the Games in 1932 and 1984.

As things stand, Los Angeles will tie Paris and London for the most times as Olympic hosts.
