GREAT Britain’s top speedway star Dan Bewley is out for the season after a horror crash in Denmark on his birthday.
The Cumbrian, currently in second place in the World Championship standings, has broken his femur after the high-speed incident.

Bewley, who turned 27 today, started from the outside gate four position but as he hit the 30-year mark, his bike suffered a mechanical problem.
He then wobbled violently before hitting the outer air fence barrier at high speed.
The race meeting in Slangerup was abandoned due to the damage to the airfence.
Bewley also races for Belle Vue Aces in Manchester and Sparta Wroclaw in Poland.

He revealed in a social media message: “Happy birthday to me!
“It could have been worse so I am grateful for that.
“But I am absolutely devastated. I truly felt like I was entering my prime, probably enjoying speedway more than I have since I was 16.
“Thank you to my team, my clubs, my sponsors and everyone who has supported me through thick and thin.

“Thank you for all the messages, it means a lot but I am really struggling to read them at the moment.
“I’ll keep you all updated when I have some news but for now I am being treated well in Denmark.
“I have a broken femur and a compressed vertebrae in my back, I knew straight away that I broke my leg but thankfully it’s a cleaner break than last time. Peace and love.”
Bewley was due to race in the Prague Grand Prix on Saturday night having finished runner-up in the opening round in Landshut at the start of the month.
He has won two gold and two silver medals for Great Britain in the Speedway of Nations and World Cup.
He has been the British Champion and British Grand Prix champion three times and also finished World No.3 last year.
It’s not the first bad injury he has sustained. He had a dreadful crash at Workington in 2018 where he sustained a broken femur (fractured in five places), a broken upper right arm, and a broken left wrist which left him in a wheelchair during recovery.
On his approach to racing this weekend, he said: “Just one round at a time to be honest, take each day as it comes.

“Obviously, it was nice to get off to a good start but it’s a long season.
“Everyone wants to win. Everyone wants more of whatever. For me it’s more about just performing the best I can.
“There are certain areas I put more focus into than ever before really to improve on.
“If everything goes to plan, we’ll be doing alright.”
