He was named in the starting XI for England‘s opener against the Americans and everything was going smoothly after Steven Gerrard‘s early goal.
But Green then made a howler to allow Clint Dempsey’s shot to squirm underneath him.
England went on to draw 1-1 against the underdogs and Green was immediately dropped for David James in the next game.
And Green has now revealed that Capello was so mad at him that he refused to speak to him for the rest of the World Cup after his costly mistake.

He told the Athletic: “After the USA match, he just told me I wasn’t playing and that was the last time he spoke to me at the tournament.
“There was no communication from Capello. Why did he care? He was just matter of fact.”
The former AC Milan and Real Madrid boss said of Green’s error at the time: “Sometimes a forward misses, sometimes a keeper makes a mistake – that’s football.
“The second half he (Green) played very well, but the mistake remains a mistake.”

Capello had a nightmare tournament as he won just one game before being dumped out in the last-16 after a 4-1 defeat to Germany.
England went on to draw 0-0 against Algeria to draw boos from travelling fans.
The Three Lions secured their place in the knockouts with a nervy 1-0 win over Slovenia but were no match for a Mesut Ozil-inspired Germany.
The game will be remembered for Frank Lampard‘s ghost goal that infamously crossed the line but wasn’t given.
Capello would last another 18 months in the job before resigning in February 2012 after disagreeing with the FA on John Terry being stripped of the captaincy.
The Champions League-winning coach later took up the Russia job and took them to the 2014 World Cup.
His last job as a manager was with Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Jattvibeing, where he lasted just nine months.
Capello retired from management in 2018 and has since turned to punditry in his native Italy.
