Punjab Kings on Saturday showed why they are considered the most dangerous batting side. The Kings created history as they chased down a 265-run target, which is the highest-ever run chase in the history of the Indian Premier League. They went past the earlier record that stood in their name since 2024 when they scored 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders.Incredibly, this feat overshadowed one of the most devastating individual innings from KL Rahul who carried the bat for Delhi Capitals with an unbeaten knock of 152 runs. While Rahul was all poise and grace and targeted the straighter boundaries, Punjab Kings openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya were all muscle. The chase started with a big six as Arya welcomed Auqib Nabi with a pull towards the cow corner. The over ended with a six over mid-wicket from Prabhsimran’s bat. The over set the frantic run chase as all the Delhi bowlers were leaking at over 20 runs an over. Mukesh Kumar, Axar Patel and Nabi were treated with disdain and Punjab ran away to score 116 in only six overs, smashing nine fours and 10 hits over the fence. But Delhi’s spinners hit back against the maniacal run scoring with three quick wickets. Axar first had Arya caught at deep midwicket on 43. Kuldeep Yadav then snared Prabhsimran, who was batting on 76, leg before wicket, and then came back to claim the wicket of the dangerous Cooper Connolly to stem the run flow.Costly errorsFrom there the game changed despite the fact that Punjab still needed 120 runs. The Delhi team committed hara-kiri as Shreyas Iyer was dropped twice by Karun Nair. First, Nair dropped a sitter off the bowling of Vipraj Nigam, when the Kings skipper was batting on 29. Three balls later, Iyer skied Kuldeep to long on, where Nair once again spilled a regulation outfield catch. The same over from Kuldeep went for 23 runs, including three sixes, as shoulders began to drop. Iyer went on to score an unbeaten 71 as the chase masters won with seven balls to spare.Delhi skipper Axar conceded that the fielding mistakes cost them the match. “We are making the same mistakes repeatedly. If you do not support the bowlers on such a wicket, I think you deserve to lose. At the same time, our bowling unit also needs to take a look (at ourselves), given their score in the powerplay. If we grab the crucial moments, two or three results would have gone our way,” he said at the post-match presentation.Earlier, Rahul and Nitish Rana combined for a partnership of 220 runs for the second wicket, the highest for the Delhi franchise team.Rahul capitalised on two lifelines — he was first dropped by Shashank Singh when on 28 and by Vijaykumar Vyshak just after completing a half-century — to register the highest individual score by an Indian in the IPL. Nitish once again showed his form as he struck a pacey innings of 91 as the home team scored 264/2.
