The recently constituted manifesto committee of the Congress held its first meeting on Friday even as efforts are on to end the internal leadership feud ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The meeting was held ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s proposed Punjab visit by the end of this month or first week of September.Headed by Fatehgarh Sahib MP Dr Amar Singh, the virtual meeting was attended by former minister Pargat Singh, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and former MLA Hardial Singh Kambhoj.However, the crucial campaign committee headed by former CM Charanjit Singh Channi and co-chairpersons including Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Dr Dharamvira Gandhi is yet to hold a meeting. The former CM said the committee was unlikely to meet till the party high command gives clarity on their demand for change of the state unit leadership.Party insiders said the leaders in the anti-Amrinder Raja Warring camp were adopting a watch-and-wait policy before announcing their next course of action. Public ly, both Warring and Channi have been saying that the party remained united.The manifesto committee met after the AICC General Secretary Punjab Affairs Bhupesh Baghel asked the state unit leaders to start mobilising party leaders and workers in run up to the elections.Dr Amar Singh said the committee members decided to draw up a “people’s manifesto” by seeking suggestions and demands from all sections of society. Discussions were also held on ensuring that the manifesto is a genuine reflection of the aspirations, concerns and priorities of Punjabis rather than being formulated solely within the party organisation. The committee members would travel extensively across Punjab in the coming days and hold consultations with a wide range of stakeholders before drafting the final document.
