The Congress on Monday demanded the resignation of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, accusing him of misleading Parliament by claiming that no Indian soldier was martyred during Operation Sindoor.Calling the statement an insult to the country’s fallen soldiers, the party said the government owed an apology to the armed forces, the families of the martyrs and the nation.Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, chairman of the party’s ex-servicemen department Col Rohit Chaudhary and retired Wing Commander Anuma Acharya alleged that the Defence Minister had made a false statement in Parliament on July 28, 2025, regarding casualties suffered during the military operation. The two leaders said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh and the BJP leadership must publicly apologise for what they described as disrespect towards soldiers who laid down their lives in service of the nation. They also renewed the Congress demand for the complete withdrawal of the Agnipath recruitment scheme.Raising questions over the handling of information related to casualties, the Congress asked why it took 13 months for the names of martyred soldiers to be officially made public despite Operation Sindoor concluding in May 2025.Calling it a compromise with national security and military tradition, Col Chaudhary said the martyrdom of a soldier serves as a source of pride and inspiration for his regiment, but the units of those killed during the operation were deprived of the opportunity to honour their sacrifice. He sought an explanation from the government for the prolonged delay in revealing their identities.
