MEETING Net Zero ­targets could put hundreds of pounds on the price of holiday flights, experts warn.

Jetting to Benidorm on the Costa Blanca would be £150 more by 2050 — and a plane to New York £400 more expensive.

It comes as Labour mayors plan a tax of up to five per cent on overnight stays here.

The flight price hike warnings comes after the Climate Change Committee (CCC), which advises the Government, says the industry should pay for pollution-cutting measures, which will probably be passed on to passengers.

Tim Alderslade, of industry body Airlines UK, said it could “price ordinary people out of the joys of travel”.

CCC chair Nigel Topping, however, said the “polluter pays principle must apply”.

He added: “If aviation is to grow, it must take responsibility for the emissions it creates.”

The CCC said the expansion of Heathrow cannot proceed unless the aviation sector cuts emissions.

To do so, it said, firms must invest in more efficient planes and green fuels.

The Department for Transport said it was investing £219million in sustainable aviation fuel production and £43million in cleaner technologies to back greener aviation.

It said expansion could boost the economy by £40billion and support 60,000 local jobs.

It added: “We will carefully consider the CCC’s advice.”

The Government aims to hit Net Zero by 2050.
