In a major jolt to Mamata Banerjee, her close aide and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Madan Mitra on Wednesday joined the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee, a day after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned his wife and two sons in connection with the municipal recruitment scam.Reacting sharply to the development, TMC MP Mahua Moitra took a swipe at the senior leader’s decision to join the rebel faction, alleging that the move came “on the special invitation of the ED”. She sarcastically wished him “good luck” as he embarked on his new political journey.Talking to reporters, Moitra claimed that the timing of Mitra’s decision was directly linked to the ED action against his family. She alleged that the veteran leader had joined the rebel camp under pressure from the central agency. “It’s not a surprise. Yesterday, his wife and two sons were summoned by the ED. So, he has gone on the summons of the ED. He has gone on the invitation of the ED,” she said.Slamming Mitra for the political U-turn, Moitra said the MLA had been attacking the Ritabrata Banerjee-led faction until recently but was now sitting alongside its leaders.“The person, who was day before yesterday abusing the Ritabrata gang, is today sitting next to Ritabrata. This has been done on the special invitation of the ED. We wish him good luck and good health. May you have a lovely time working under the Ritabrata gang,” she said.Meanwhile, welcoming the veteran leader into his team, Ritabrata said, “The situation is crystal clear. It’s a battle against the individual cult, and the collective is getting stronger by the day. Today, Madan Mitra, a veteran politician, MLA and former minister, has joined the collective. So, it’s a welcome move.”After joining the Ritabrata camp, Mitra said, “I have only changed my room, not my house. I am very much in the TMC”.Since losing the West Bengal elections, Mamata has been witnessing setbacks, the biggest being a large number of MLAs led by Ritabrata splitting from the party and claiming to be the “real TMC”.
