SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami has accused Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed in connection with the case of 328 holy saroops of interfering in the Sikh body’s administrative affairs by seeking unnecessary information.Raising serious objections to the functioning of SIT constituted by the Punjab Government, Dhami alleged that it is going beyond its jurisdiction and unnecessarily interfering in the internal and administrative affairs of SGPC.Objecting to SIT’s actions, the SGPC president said that demanding details of SGPC’s financial accounts, bank transactions, and overall financial records does not fall within SIT’s jurisdiction. He alleged that SIT has sent representatives to banks to gather account details and, on other occasions, sought detailed financial information through official letters. He further said SIT has now also sought details of agreements signed in the past with private channels ETC and G Next Media concerning the Gurbani Kirtan broadcast, despite these having no relation to the case of the 328 holy saroops.Dhami added that information already submitted to SIT is being repeatedly sought through fresh letters. He categorically stated that under the guise of investigation, attempts are being made to undermine the constitutional status of the Sikh community’s premier religious institution, which cannot be accepted under any circumstances. He said SIT has been continuously seeking information that has no connection whatsoever with the case of the 328 holy saroops.“All this is being done beyond the original purpose of the investigation,” he said, adding that the nature of the questions asked and the arbitrary demands for information indicate that SIT may be working with motives unrelated to the actual probe.Dhami said it appears that the Punjab Government, through SIT, is attempting to target the constitutional rights of the Sikh community’s apex institution. He said this is not merely an issue concerning SGPC, but a sensitive matter linked to the autonomy and rights of Sikh institutions.“This is being done despite the fact that SGPC has been cooperating with the investigation team with complete sincerity and transparency,” he said. In view of the directives of the Akal Takht, every required piece of information and assistance has been provided to the SIT. However, instead of appreciating this cooperation, SIT has included SGPC’s administrative and internal matters in its investigation. He asked SIT not to exceed its authority and to confine itself strictly to the investigation of the 328 holy saroops case.
