MANCHESTER UNITED were handed a controversial 1-0 home defeat by ten-man Manchester City after Erling Haaland’s goal was bizarrely awarded.

Haaland looked well offside when he tapped home from Josko Gvardiol‘s crossed but it was deemed Patrick Dorgu‘s boot played him on.

City had it all to do after Phil Foden was sent off for lashing out at Bruno Fernandes in the first half but held on to secure an unlikely three points.

United could and should have got a point after Bryan Mbeumo‘s poor miss in the closing stages.

Barely muddied his gloves in the first half.

Could do little about Erling Haaland’s far post finish and unconvincingly shovelled an Enzo Fernandez effort onto the post.

Diogo Dalot – 4

Could have got on the end of an early diagonal pass, a run he has made several times before without scoring.

Played himself into trouble in his own third twice and was lazily flagged offside.

Ironically, Patrick Dorgu on the other side turned attack into defence to help City score.

Harry Maguire – 5

Left one on Reyan Cherki early on and had a much different afternoon than expected after Phil Foden was dismissed.

Careless with the ball at times and did not exert his authority enough all afternoon.

Lisandro Martinez – 6

Has a better record against Erling Haaland than many think and he was on song against the Norwegian in the first half.

But Haaland broke the deadlock with Martinez not helped by Dorgu going rogue.

Patrick Dorgu – 4

Cost United with a clumsy pass that Haaland punished to put City 1-0 up.

Dorgu is dubious enough in defence and was not an asset in attack, despite extra freedom.

Like Dalot, he was casually caught offside when in a threatening position.

Youri Tielemans – 5

The early signs suggested he could struggle but City lacked a creator to grab the game by the lapels and Tielemans had more time to survey his surroundings.

Did nothing to influence the game, though.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6

Not as totemic against a much more testing midfield in the first half but grabbed the game by the lapels in the second.

Smacked the post at 0-0 and seemed set to exert his control even more but then Haaland changed the scoreboard.

Bryan Mbeumo – 5

After being on easy street against right backs in recent weeks, Mbeumo had a formidable foe in Josko Gvardiol and his wild attempt from distance just before the hour signalled how tough going he was finding it.

His weakest performance of the season.

Bruno Fernandes – 5

Snide to boot Phil Foden a couple of times but the reaction was a red card offence.

The incident did not galvanise Fernandes, who hit some poor passes and did not dominate the game as profoundly as he did in January.

Marcus Rashford – 6

Back in the starting XI and had an engrossing duel with Matheus Nunes, who marshalled the United winger impressively.

Struck the post with a precisely-hit free kick but came second best in his battle with Nunes.

Matheus Cunha – 5

Fluid on and off the ball as he knitted attacks together but United lacked a focal point, especially after Foden headed down the tunnel.

Also attempted a couple of potshots from distance and fortunate not to make way late on.

Came on too late when he should have come on at the interval.
