Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday accused the Centre’s ruling party, BJP, of trying to murder democracy by weaponising the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigations against leaders of Opposition parties.Reacting to the second ED raid on a party leader in three days, Mann said that while they condemn the raids on Arora and Mittal, he or his party colleagues could not be intimidated this way by the Centre.“Only two people are running the country. Remember there was a family planning slogan of Hum do, humare do. Here, hum do is Modi and Shah, and humare do are Ambani and Adani. They don’t care about anyone else,” he said, adding that these raids appear to be a precursor to their political game plan for Punjab before the elections.“They are getting just one or two seats in Punjab. They do not even have 117 contestants to field in 117 constituencies. To increase their count, they have started using the ED and CBI after their experiment of opening a Congress wing in the BJP failed (referring to the huge intake of Congress leaders in the Punjab BJP),” he told mediapersons at a hurriedly convened press conference, adding, “Do all you want to scare us, we won’t bend or break.”“This only proves that democracy is under threat. All right-thinking persons in the country should come forward to save democracy. It cannot happen that you try to intimidate Opposition leaders using central agencies in a bid to force them to join the BJP,” he said.Mann, while taking an anti-BJP stance, also said that one must look at what is happening in Bihar and Bengal. “In Bihar, they have made a person accused of murders and with little education as CM. In Bengal, they have used the Chief Election Commission to change the top officers of the state in the midst of elections. Is this how democracy works?” he asked.
