In what appears to be the first win for those protesting the proposed renaming of Dyal Singh Evening College, New Delhi, the agenda circulated today for the Wednesday meeting of the Delhi University Executive Council does not mention the renaming item. The meeting of the council will happen tomorrow on the back of another protest by the Staff Association of Dyal Singh Evening College, which sat on a dharna outside the office of the principal today, again demanding that the proposal to rename the college be dropped entirely. Mithilesh Singh, president, Staff Association of Dyal Singh College, told The Tribune that they had been hearing that the DU Executive Council would, in its next meeting, formalise the proposal to rename Dyal Singh College as Banda Singh Bahadur College.“It feels like a small win that the agenda is not listed. Our protests appear to have paid off for the time being. But our protests will continue till the proposal is withdrawn,” he said. The college principal last week promised the protesting staffers a meeting on April 28 to discuss the issue. That meeting did not happen today because the principal wrote to DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh seeking permission to convene a staff council meeting on the issue, as demanded by the agitating teachers. Association leaders said it was unprecedented for a principal to seek the VC’s permission to call a staff council meeting, which is a college level issue.Today’s protest saw the participation of Delhi University Teachers’ Association president VS Negi and vice-president Bhupinder Singh. Two DU College teachers’ representatives who are elected members of the DU Executive Council (the varsity’s decision-making body) — Jattvibeil Kumar and Mithuraj Dhusia — are also against renaming the college.Jattvibeil Kumar said: “We will not let the great legacy of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia be diluted. The DU Executive Council meeting agenda for tomorrow does not mention anything about the college renaming. If a last minute item is brought, we will not let it pass.”The governing body of Dyal Singh Evening College in December 2025 passed a resolution to rename Dyal Singh Evening College after Banda Singh Bahadur. The Staff Association has termed the resolution illegal saying it was cleared bypassing the college staff council. Staffers are now demanding the withdrawal of this resolution.
