WHEN I read the accusations that King Charles “sounded elated” after Princess Diana died — and trashed his former wife in a phone call with her brother, I was shocked.
From my experience of working with Charles for 50 years, I don’t believe a word of it.

I am convinced our King would never have said anything to tarnish the reputation and memory of the mother of his children.
Back in 1992 when Charles and Diana separated after 11 years of marriage, I remember the prince wrote to all his pals and warned they would lose his friendship if they said anything bad about her.

As for being elated, I was in Paris the day Diana died and took pictures of Prince Charles accompanying her flag-covered coffin as it left hospital on her final journey.
Trust me, this man who hours earlier had broken the news to his young sons that their mother had just died, was distraught.

I also recall in the week of Diana’s funeral, a reporter being admonished for suggesting William was going to walk behind his mother’s coffin and being told “no plans have been made for that”.
The decision came, I was told, after a last-minute intervention by Prince Philip, who said to grandson William: “If you walk, we’re all with you.”
As their uncle, Earl Spencer had no right to tell William and Harry’s father what to do.
As far as I can see their uncle has not done much for them since the 1997 funeral.
I covered the Earl’s divorce from his first wife Victoria — he wasn’t very nice to her.
King Charles is an honourable man and would never say anything bad about Diana.
