Ahead of elections to Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, the Election Commission of India has issued “no drinking ahead of polls orders” in both states.In a direction on Monday, the EC told both states to declare dry days for 48 hours ending the hour determined for the conclusion of elections in the two states.The poll panel cited Section 135 C of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951 to direct the declaration of dry days in election-going states.The said the section bars service of intoxicating drinks for 48 hours that end with the last hour of elections in the state concerned.Tamil Nadu polls in one phase on April 23.West Bengal will have a two-phase voting on April 23 and 29.Bengal will need to comply with the drinking orders on both dates.
