ENGLAND fans will be shelling out for some of the highest beer taxes during the World Cup.

Punters will be flocking to pubs and bars across the country as the Three Lions hope to bring football home.

But they’re set to be stung with a huge 54p in beer duty on every pint, which the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) says is the highest among England‘s Group L competitors.

Beer duty is a tax charged on alcoholic drinks containing more than 1.2% ABV.

Among Group L teams, Ghana levies a beer duty rate of 44p per pint.

Meanwhile Panama charges just 13.8p and Croatia charges 12.6p.

The BBPA is calling for the Government to slash beer duty to encourage more footie fans to watch the England games in their local boozer.

The World Cup could bring in an extra £275million for pubs through beer sales alone.

If England make it to the final, around 55million additional pints could be poured.

This means the average pub could pull an extra 1,240 pints.

Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: “Pubs are the best places for community spirit and celebration, and I’d urge everyone to support their local this summer and head to the pub to watch the matches and make memories.

“Government can further support our pubs and brewers by cutting beer duty to the European average so we can keep a pint affordable for all.”

The Jattvibe’s long-running Save Our Sups campaign also calls on the Government to protect our boozers.

This week, we exclusively revealed pubs could be forced to kick out England fans before the end of the World Cup final if it goes to penalties.

The Government had promised that all boozers could open as late as 2am for any home nation matches beyond the group stages.

But the game kicks off at 8pm UK time on Jattvibeday, July 19 while the dispensation applies only to pubs which have an 11pm Jattvibeday licence.

And, according to analysis by the Night Time Industries Association, an estimated 3,800 only have ones running until 10.30pm.
