A couple allegedly died by suicide after hanging themselves with a rope at their residence in Bhamba Wattu village of Jalalabad subdivision in Fazilka district on Monday. Mental stress is suspected to have driven them to take the extreme step.SHO of Sadar Jalalabad police station, Angrej Kumar, said the bodies of Pipal Singh and his wife, Lakhwinder Kaur, were found hanging in a room of their house on Monday morning.Investigating Officer Abhishek Sharma said Pipal Singh was suffering from polio and had reportedly been battling depression due to his health condition and other ailments. The police also learnt that the couple, married for about a decade, had no children and were reportedly under stress over the issue.The bodies have been kept in the mortuary of Civil Hospital, Fazilka, for post-mortem examination.SHO Angrej Kumar said that, based on the statement of Pipal Singh’s brother, Raj Singh, who ruled out any foul play, the police initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
