The Kurukshetra police have registered an FIR against Jannayak Janta Party leader Digvijay Singh Chautala, along with several other JJP leaders and an assistant professor of Kurukshetra University. The case has been registered under charges including damaging public property, trespassing, and conspiracy, following allegations that chairs and other property were damaged during an event held by JJP at Kurukshetra University on April 7.In his complaint to police, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Kurukshetra University stated that a request had been received for booking Dr RK Sadan on April 2 for organising a programme about “drug abuse and role of youth to demolish it and also participation of youth and students in politics” on April 7. The booking was made accordingly in the name of Dr Ajayab Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Hindi, on April 4.As per the complaint, on April 7, security staff reported that nearly 300-400 students and outsiders participated in the programme. The venue, though booked for a drug abuse awareness programme, was allegedly used for delivering political speeches, which were said to have created rivalry between student groups, disturbed the academic environment and social harmony in the university, and caused obstruction in public work.It was further stated that no programme related to drug abuse was conducted as per the stated purpose, and the entry into the premises was allegedly aimed at creating ruckus and disharmony among students. It was also reported that during the event, nearly 80 chairs and some other property of Dr RK Sadan were damaged.Following the incident, students belonging to ABVP expressed resentment against the university and JJP. However, the university later pacified the students and informed them that the organisers had approached the university after the event and assured payment for the damages.During the event, JJP leader Digvijay Singh Chautala had warned the state government of launching a statewide protest if a notification on direct student union elections in Haryana was not issued within three months. The FIR has been registered against Chautala, Jaswinder Khehra, Dr Ajayab Singh, Vishal Mukimpura, Naveen Suhag, Deepak Malik, Rajesh Pilot, Manju Jakhar, Raju, Mahi, Ishika and others.Meanwhile, Youth JJP senior state vice-president Jaswinder Khehra said the FIR was registered on government directions, stating that although the event was held on April 7 and the FIR was registered on April 17, they had already agreed to pay for the damages. He also said Digvijay Chautala was the chief guest at the event.“The hall was booked for which rent and security were paid. After the damages, we had all the negotiations with the university and the university had agreed to send the estimates so that the fine is paid. But after the Hisar incident, on the directions of the government, the university has got the FIR registered,” Khehra alleged. After the FIR, Digvijay Chautala posted on his social media handle, stating, “Another FIR has been filed against me and my companions in an old case. The government thinks we will be scared. The government wants to restrict the university to just RSS and ABVP. On important issues like fee hikes, hostel facilities, and student union elections, the government remains silent. This fight is not of JJP or INSO, but for the freedom of the university.“It is possible the government might send me and some of my companions to jail, but you must not let this fight weaken. If the voice is suppressed today, no one else will have the courage tomorrow. We all must come together to win this battle, no matter what sacrifices we have to make. We will fight and we will win.”
