EX-ENGLAND boss Steve McClaren has made a bold suggestion to current Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of the World Cup.

The former Manchester United assistant, who was last at the club working under Erik Ten Hag, said Harry Maguire should be used UP FRONT as he’s a “weapon” in both boxes.

McClaren, 64, was in the England hot seat in 2006 but only lasted a year after the Three Lions failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

He discussed what England ought to do in this summer’s tournament, following the notable rise of set-pieces in English football.

Speaking to The Athletic, he said: “Even if Maguire is a sub. You bring him on for 20 minutes and stick him up front, what a weapon in each box.

“I heard Tuchel say set plays are going to be a big part of the World Cup and I’m thinking, Harry has got to be first on the list.”

McClaren, who worked with Maguire when he was assistant to Erik ten Hag, has not suggested an idea that is unheard of.

The centre-back has been used as a striker towards the end of games in the past.

He was a makeshift striker in United’s dramatic win over Lyon in the Europa League last season.

He scored in the 121st minute to win the quarter-final for the Red Devils and proved that he can be effective up-top.

So despite England having Ballon d’Or favourite Harry Kane in the No9 position, we could see centre-back Maguire joining him up there if things get desperate.

Maguire’s pick-of-the-bunch penalty against Italy in final of Euro 2020 is also a moment not forgotten by fans of the Three Lions.

So if he was brought on to be a nuisance up front in the closing minutes of a knockout tie, his penalty pedigree could well be called upon again.

England begin their World Cup campaign in Texas as they face World Cup 2018 semi-final foes Croatia.

It looks to be the toughest fixture of the group with Ghana and Panama filling the other two spots in Group L.

During his conversation with The Athletic McCLaren also shed light on Erik ten Hag’s row with Cristiano Ronaldo while he worked under the Dutchman from 2022 until 2024.
