The mid-sized, five-seater family SUV has become a firm favourite among Brits, despite only becoming available to buy on the market early last year.

The brand also features another model on the list, the Jaecoo 5, coming in as the fourth best-selling car in August.

In fact, Chinese-owned brands have dominated the top five list, with the likes of MG HS coming in third with 1,785 new cars registered.

As for electric vehicles, the Tesla Model 3 has taken the title from the previous victor, the Renault 5.

With 1,296 sales last month, the all-electric sports sedan features five seats, a top speed of 110mph and an official range of up to 332 miles – making it an ideal family car for longer road trips.

In second and third place, Tesla Model Y and Vauxhall Frontera followed behind with 884 and 874 registrations respectively.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said: “August was a bright spot for the new car market and another strong month for electric car uptake, showing that motorists are responding to the huge choice and compelling offers available.“
