MIGRANTS are being granted asylum even when they may not be entitled to it, UN investigators have warned.

A probe by the organisation’s Refugee Agency found serious flaws in Home Office interviews used to decide who is allowed to stay in the UK.

Officials warned rushed questioning meant asylum was at risk of being wrongly granted to people who do not qualify — while genuine refugees could be rejected.

UN officials examined 60 interviews and cases and found the full basis of an applicant’s claim was still unclear after questioning in nearly a third of interviews studied.

They uncovered a “failure to probe material facts”, too many closed questions and interpreters summarising migrants’ answers instead of translating them fully.

They warned this created a “real risk” of genuine refugees being rejected while others were granted asylum despite not qualifying.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “The UN — hardly a hostile witness — has told the Home Office that it is granting asylum to people who are not entitled to it.

“Last year alone 58,000 people were granted asylum or leave to remain, a ten per cent increase on the year before, and the highest number of initial decisions since records began.”

Meanwhile, a Government whistleblower has claimed just one in 100 asylum claims are genuine and many “use the same script”.

The Home Office insider, who has assessed thousands of applications, said he and his colleagues have encountered hundreds of Iraqi Kurds purporting to be in a relationship with the daughter of Kurdistan’s prime minister.

The number is so high that it has allegedly become a “running joke” among officials.

He also told The Times that hundreds of Pakistanis claim to fear for their lives because they are in a gay relationship with the same man.

Multiple claims feature photos of “topless guys in a club with their arms around each other trying to prove they’re gay”.
