THE feature race on day three is the Group 1 Nassau Stakes, traditionally one of the most important contests of the season for fillies and mares. This year’s winning and losing of the Nassau is the the hands of Coolmore and their unbeaten filly, Diamond Necklace.
The supporting card offers plenty of depth, with the Richmond Stakes providing an important examination for the leading juvenile sprinters and the Gordon Stakes giving several promising three-year-olds the chance to strengthen their claims for major middle-distance prizes later in the campaign.
With a Group 1 showpiece at the heart of the card and quality racing throughout the afternoon, day three promises another compelling chapter in one of the highlights of the summer Flat season.

Harmonics brings one of the stronger pieces of form into the contest after finishing just over four lengths behind Lost Boys in the Golden Gates Stakes at Royal Ascot. That form has already received a useful boost, with Nil Bua Gan Dua subsequently landing a Listed prize at Gowran Park last week, and the John and Thady Gosden-trained colt is entitled to remain competitive from his current mark.
He is difficult to dismiss, but preference is for the less exposed DARK WHISPER, who makes his handicap debut after showing a likeable attitude to open his account at Ffos Las.
The David Menuisier-trained son of Dark Angel travelled strongly before finding enough when asked for his full effort, and the form of his earlier maiden efforts has worked out well enough to suggest an opening mark of 87 is workable.
Jamie Spencer takes over in the saddle and could prove an ideal fit. With no shortage of possible pace in the race, Dark Whisper should have the opportunity to settle before being delivered with a late challenge.
He still looked as though he was learning at Ffos Las and should improve with experience, while the move into a strongly run handicap may enable him to switch off more effectively.
Goodwood can be a difficult track for hold-up performers, but Spencer knows the circuit as well as anyone and Dark Whisper appears to possess the turn of foot required to make his presence felt in the short straight.Savvy Disko, Ciarrai Abu and Birgham Dub are others with compelling claims in a deep opening contest.

2:25 – Markel Richmond Stakes (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) (Class 1) (2yo) – 6f
Cut A Dash sets a solid standard after making an impressive winning debut at York before finishing a close fourth behind Great Barrier Reef in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.
He was beaten only a length in that Group 2 contest and remains open to progress, particularly now returning to six furlongs on a track that should reward his tactical speed. On form, he is clearly one of the horses to beat.
However, FLANN SUNNA has done nothing but impress in two starts and may be capable of taking another significant step up the ladder. The son of Blue Point swept his rivals aside on debut, and the form has already worked out well, with runner-up Perfect Nation winning comfortably on his next start.
Flann Jattvibena then confirmed that promise in a conditions race at Ascot, travelling with authority before putting the contest to bed with the minimum of fuss.
That performance prompted Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum to acquire the colt, and his new connections may have secured a juvenile capable of developing into one of the leading sprinters of his generation.He has shown speed, professionalism and the ability to quicken, all qualities that should stand him in good stead at Goodwood.
The sharper nature of this track presents a new challenge, but Flann Jattvibena has looked straightforward in both starts and should be able to Goodwood.
Man’s Best Friend, who landed a large-field maiden at Naas, is the sole Ballydoyle representative and commands respect on that basis alone, while Hickory Lad may be capable of outrunning his odds.

3:00 – Maison Perrier Gordon Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (3yo) – 1m4f
Bay Of Brilliance brings Classic form into the race after finishing a creditable fourth in the Derby at Epsom.
That effort gives him an obvious chance now dropping into Group 3 company, but his subsequent performance in the German Derby was deeply disappointing. Sent off favourite, he failed to reproduce anything close to his Epsom form and must now prove that run was just a blip.
At the head of the market, he looks worth opposing.
Joseph O’Brien sends over ENCELADUS, who created a strong impression when landing a competitive handicap at Royal Ascot.
The son of Galiway travelled like a Group horse hiding in a handicap. He travelled strongly throughout and the stayed on strongly to secure victory, and the form has since received an emphatic boost.
Runner-up Al Azd has subsequently bolted up in handicap company from a mark 8lb higher than the one from which he competed at the royal meeting, giving Enceladus’ performance considerably more substance.
The step from handicap company into Group 3 level demands further improvement, but his Royal Ascot success suggested he is more than capable of making that transition.
He stays the trip strongly, remains lightly raced and appears to possess the right profile for a race often used as a stepping stone towards the St Leger.
Fellow Irish challenger Geryon may prove the chief danger. He has shaped as though this distance will suit and could help provide an Irish one-two.

3:35 – Qatar Nassau Stakes (Group 1) (Fillies & Mares) (Class 1) (3yo+) – 1m2f
Aidan O’Brien has dominated the last two renewals of the Nassau Stakes with Opera Singer and Whirl, and Ballydoyle appears to hold another outstanding chance through the unbeaten DIAMOND NECKLACE.
The daughter of St Mark’s Basilica arrives with a perfect record and three Group 1 victories already to her name, establishing herself as one of the outstanding fillies of her generation.
Her latest success at Chantilly came by only a short head, but the narrow winning margin failed to reflect the confidence with which Ryan Moore rode her.
Moore appeared convinced throughout the closing stages that Diamond Necklace would find enough when required, and the filly responded willingly to get on top where it mattered.
That performance demonstrated both her class and toughness, while the return to a mile and a quarter should present no concerns.
Goodwood poses a different tactical challenge, particularly if the race develops into a steadily run affair, but Diamond Necklace has already shown enough versatility to suggest she can adapt with the minimum of fuss.
Friendly Soul and See The Fire are high-class opponents capable of making the selection work, and both possess the ability to capitalise if the favourite fails to perform. However, Diamond Necklace remains unexposed, has answered every question asked of her and appears capable of improving again.

4:10 – Buccellati Handicap (Class 3) (3yo 0-95) – 5f
Noble View looked progressive when recording back-to-back victories before disappointing as favourite at Thirsk in May.
Richard Hannon has since given him a break and had him gelded, and it would be no surprise to see him leave that latest effort behind if the procedure has helped him settle.
Naana’s Shadow arrives in excellent form, having won three of her six starts this season. Oisin Murphy partnered her for the latest of those victories and keeps the ride, which is an obvious positive. She has become increasingly reliable and deserves her prominent place in the market. However, a chance is taken on ONE AND GONE at a much bigger price.
The gelding recorded a course-and-distance victory two starts ago before following up at Sandown with a determined performance in a strong race.
He is not entirely straightforward and has shown his share of quirks, but recent evidence suggests he is thriving and becoming more reliable with racing.
His ability to travel prominently should help him secure a useful position, while his proven course form is an important advantage in a race where several rivals have yet to experience Goodwood.
If he breaks cleanly and settles into a rhythm, One And Gone could be extremely difficult to reel in.
Old Is Gold, Quantum Power and Coyy are others worth considering in a wide-open sprint.

4:45 – Whispering Angel Nursery Handicap (Class 2) (2yo) – 7f
The nursery looks a tightly matched contest, with several promising juveniles arriving on upward curves and open to further improvement, and The Bookkeeper is an obvious starting point.
Richard Hughes’ colt drops back into handicap company after a respectable performance at Epsom, where the sharp nature of the track may not have played entirely to his strengths.
The strapping son of Sioux Nation should appreciate returning to seven furlongs, and Hughes has an excellent record when targeting runners at this meeting.
The Bookkeeper remains capable of better and looks a strong contender, but preference is for WISE AND WONDERFUL.
Andrew Balding teams up with the in-form Saffie Osborne aboard a son of Oasis Dream who created a striking impression when winning at Epsom earlier this month.
Wise And Wonderful travelled like the best horse from a long way out before settling the contest in only a few strides. The authority of that success suggested there was still more in reserve, and a 3lb rise looks lenient considering the ease with which he came clear.
His experience of racing down Epsom’s gradients should prove valuable at Goodwood. He has enough tactical speed to hold a prominent position and appears capable of progressing again now moving into a more competitive nursery.
The Ginger Kid and Mia Fantasia also deserve respect, but Wise And Wonderful may still be ahead of his mark.

5:20 – Tatler British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (GBB/IRE Incentive Race) (Class 2) (2yo) – 7f
There is little separating the leading contenders on the evidence available, and improvement from first to second start could prove decisive.
Elevating sets the standard among the British-trained fillies with experience after shaping with considerable promise when second on debut at York. She travelled well, stayed on strongly and should know significantly more this time.
John and Thady Gosden introduce Beguiled, a 72,000gns yearling whose pedigree gives her every chance of making a successful debut. The Gosden yard is more than capable of producing a juvenile ready to win first time, and any significant market support would be worth noting.
However, preference is for the Ballydoyle representative SO LOVELY.
The daughter of Wootton Bassett shaped with abundant promise when runner-up to Bellesque at Leopardstown.
She travelled with enthusiasm but still looked green when the race began to develop, and the experience should bring her forward considerably.
Aidan O’Brien’s two-year-olds regularly take a sizeable step forward from their first to second appearance, and So Lovely’s pedigree suggests she should improve with racing and distance.
The way she stayed on at Leopardstown indicated seven furlongs is ideal at this stage of her career.
Elevating is respected, but So Lovely appears to possess the greater potential.

5:55 – HKJC World Pool Handicap (Class 3) (3yo 0-90) – 1m
A maximum field of 20 brings day three to a close, and the final race presents another demanding handicap puzzle.
Law Court arrives in consistently strong form, with his record this season reading 2212. He should be suited by a strong pace and looks certain to be involved if reproducing the level of his latest Sandown performance.
Exclusive Code opened his account at Newbury in April before being given a break ahead of the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot. He ran with credit in that fiercely competitive contest and remains lightly raced enough to improve beyond his current mark.
However, the vote goes to STORMING POINT, who makes his handicap debut with Ryan Moore returning to the saddle.
Moore was aboard when the Gary and Josh Moore-trained colt lost all chance at the start at Kempton in May, but Storming Point has since produced two solid efforts in maiden and novice company. Those runs should have helped him mature, and the switch into handicap company could provide the opportunity for him to show his true level.
His opening mark looks workable on the pick of his form, and a strongly run mile should suit, and he can come home strong.
The booking of Ryan Moore is clearly significant, while victory would provide another memorable Goodwood success for the Moore family.
Get Outta Here was narrowly denied over course and distance before disappointing as favourite at York. He retains solid claims if bouncing back, while Law Court remains a major threat.
