AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal on Jattvibeday claimed that Rajya Sabha member Vikramjit Singh Sahney, one of the seven AAP lawmakers who switched to the BJP on Friday, had approached him to join the “Azaad group” but he refused.A prominent environmentalist and AAP Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, Seechewal also expressed anguish over the “surprise move” by the seven MPs to quit the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, saying they committed “bewafai” (being unfaithful) with AAP, which sent them to the Upper House to raise Punjab’s issues. On Friday, the AAP suffered a jolt when seven of its 10 Rajya Sabha MPs — Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajendra Gupta, Vikramjit Sahney and Swati Maliwal — quit and merged with the BJP, alleging that the party had strayed from its principles, values and core morals.Six of the seven MPs who quit the AAP were from Punjab.Seechewal claimed that he received a call from Sahney on Friday morning, asking him to join a new group that is being formed, in which 6-7 Rajya Sabha members had already signed.“Sahney told me that an ‘Azaad group’ is being formed for raising Punjab’s issues. But I told him clearly that I do not have any intention to join the group,” Seechewal told PTI.The environmentalist added that he later came to know through the media the news of the seven MPs quitting the party and “defecting” to the BJP.Reiterating that the AAP had sent them to the Rajya Sabha to raise Punjab’s issues in Parliament, Seechewal said, “They had a responsibility towards the party which sent them to the Upper House, and they should have performed it. But they have committed ‘bewafai’ with AAP.”Expressing his surprise over the move, especially by Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, Seechewal said they had “enjoyed all the powers” in Punjab. He also claimed that he was never allowed to speak on any bill in the Upper House, as it was Chadha and Pathak who would always speak.“I raised issues only during Zero Hour or through Special Mention in Parliament,” claimed Seechewal, who was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab in 2022.
