The centuries-old Dukh Bhanjani Beri inside the Golden Temple complex was damaged due to strong winds. Darbar Sahib manager Major Singh said while a few branches of the historic tree broke, its main trunks remained intact.“The Beri has sustained some damage, but there is no cause for major concern. The main trunk is safe and intact,” he said.Singh clarified that no damage was reported to the other historic trees in the Golden Temple complex, including Ber Baba Budha Sahib and Lachi Ber in the parikrama. The tamarind tree located outside Akal Takht Sahib also remained unaffected by the storm. The historic Ber trees within the Golden Temple complex have been under scientific care of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) experts since 2005. Owing to the continuous conservation efforts, the centuries-old trees, whose trunks had aged overtime, began bearing fruit again in 2018.The storm that struck the city late on Thursday evening also damaged canopies and temporary coverings installed within the Golden Temple complex. Darbar Sahib management and sewadars launched a cleaning operation, removing broken branches and leaves from the parikrama and the holy sarovar.Meanwhile, rainwater accumulated outside the Darshani Deodhi located in the open space in front of Akal Takht Sahib and on a section of the parikrama. It was later drained out using disposal pumps. Meanwhile, devotees were seen passing through the stagnant water to pay obeisance at the holy shrine amid the rain.
