Heavy rains lash Chandigarh; waterlogging reported from several areas

Medium to heavy rain accompanied by intermittent drizzle through the day marked the establishment of the southwest monsoon over Chandigarh on Thursday, bringing down temperatures further and causing waterlogging at several low-lying locations.Residents woke up to intermittent rain overnight. Light drizzle and overcast skies persisted through the morning before showers intensified in the afternoon and continued till the filing of this report.The rainfall led to waterlogging at several low-lying areas, road intersections, internal roads, streets and parking lots. Water accumulated at several locations after storm-water drains and road gullies failed to clear runoff quickly, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters.Also read: Held up for several days, monsoon finally covers entire North-West region, remaining parts of countryAccording to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh recorded 34 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, the highest during the day in Punjab and the third highest in the Punjab-Haryana region, after Yamunanagar (54 mm) and Palwal (38.5 mm).The city had already received 5.4 mm rainfall during the preceding 24-hour period ending 8.30 am, taking the cumulative rainfall to 68.2 mm since June 1. Relative humidity ranged between 82 per cent and 94 per cent.The rain brought temperatures down for the second consecutive day. Chandigarh’s maximum temperature settled at 28.9°C, falling 3.1 degrees Celsius from the previous day and remaining 5.5 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature was 24.4°C, 1.2 degrees lower than Wednesday and 2.2 degrees below normal.Among stations in Punjab, Mohali recorded the lowest maximum temperature at 27.8°C, while Chandigarh recorded the second lowest at 28.9°C. Chandigarh also recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Punjab at 24.4°C.The IMD’s orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain on Thursday will be downgraded to a yellow alert from Friday and extended through Monday, with forecasts of thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain at isolated places and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph.No weather warning has been issued from Tuesday onwards, although light rain and thunderstorms may continue under monsoon conditions.An IMD spokesperson said, “The southwest monsoon is now established over Chandigarh. Intermittent spells of rain are expected to continue through Monday, with isolated heavy rainfall during this period. Rainfall activity is likely to reduce from Tuesday, although monsoon conditions will persist.”
